Recorded by Mac McCaughan at home in August 2022, The Sound of Yourself (Acoustic Versions) marks the one-year anniversary of the release of his solo album The Sound of Yourself. The digital EP showcases a different side of six songs from the record, featuring new instrumentation plus a fresh guest appearance.

Of the release, Mac writes:

When I toured for the album, I had to learn how to play these songs on guitar when for the most part they had been written on bass or keyboards, so these are kind of the versions of these songs I’d be playing if I were doing a solo acoustic show (except “Dawn Bends (Piano)”—I cannot play the piano to save my life). There are just a couple embellishments, and the only guest is Matt Douglas on “Sleep Donor (Acoustic)” playing sax as he did on this song during the tour.
