Friendship release 'Chaos Outside (Free Association Remixes)' featuring more eaze, Ylayali, Andy Loebs, and Lambchop
Just ahead of their first ever tour of the West Coast, Friendship return with Chaos Outside (Free Association Remixes). On the EP, which is available in full today, four artists—more eaze, Ylayali, Andy Loebs, and Lambchop—take the reins on “Free Association,” leading the Caveman Wakes Up stunner into new territory. In addition to the EP, Friendship is also sharing a new video for “Free Association (More Eaze Remix)” by Zach Puls, remixing his video for the original track. Listen to Chaos Outside wherever you stream music!
Friendship’s Dan Wriggins on Chaos Outside:
Four remixes of Friendship’s “Free Association” by four of the game’s headiest. A lot of Friendship songs don’t feel too different between the stage and the studio. “Free Association” was an exception and nearly didn’t make it onto Caveman Wakes Up because the mix was so beastly. We slogged through and discovered something we loved: a composite of disparate parts that never sounded right together until they did. It only stands to reason that our friends might devise even more glorious assemblages. We ended up with four new songs, freaky peeks into the creative brains of more eaze, Ylayali, Andy Loebs, and Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner. Anything marvelous is beautiful.
Spared from the cutting-room floor and thrust into the spotlight as the lead single of one of the year’s most critically acclaimed albums, “Free Association” is further burnished by the remixes on Chaos Outside. Mari Maurice, aka more eaze, expands the space of the song, her glitched vocals adding unexpected cool to the drawn-out strings. Ylayali—22 Degree Halo and 2nd Grade drummer Francis Lyons—re-envisions the track as a degraded, propulsive loop, Wriggins’ voice and piano occasionally warbling to the surface like a transmission from another world. Andy Loebs manipulates the vocals even further, pitch-shifting and multitracking it while pushing and pulling the tempo towards a kind of cosmic equilibrium. Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner brings it home by pulling the focus as tightly as possible on Wriggins’ baritone, ragged and resolute against the ambience Wagner draws out of the rest of the track. Four new songs, each one extracting something different from the heart of the original, which is also represented on Chaos Outside, as is its instrumental.
