The Mountain Goats share “Fresh Tattoo,” the driving new single from their recently announced new album, Jenny from Thebes. The track features Alicia Bognanno from Bully on guitar, horns by Matt Douglas and Evan Ringel, and backing vocals from Matt Nathanson. Stream and share “Fresh Tattoo” wherever you listen to music, and pre-order Jenny from Thebes on CD, LP, cassette, or yellow & black Peak Vinyl from the Merge store!

Of the song, John Darnielle says:

Been wanting to share this one since the day I finished writing it, back when it was just piano and voice. But it's so much better with my band playing it, and Alicia Bognanno, and Matt Nathanson on some of the sweetest vocal harmonies ever. It's the flashpoint of the Jenny story: here she takes in her last lodger, here she marks her skin to say she's done taking in lodgers after this. Produced by Trina Shoemaker at the Church in Tulsa: enjoy!

A sequel to their beloved 2002 album All Hail West Texas, Jenny from Thebes is a lush collection of showtunes, pushing John Darnielle as a vocalist and the Mountain Goats as a band, broadening their sonic palette once again by leaning into influences like Godspell, Jim Steinman, and The Cars. Jenny from Thebes, out October 27, is a widescreen musical in scope, a melodrama of richly detailed characters and sweeping emotions.

Hot on the heels of a US tour that included the band’s biggest sold-out shows to date, the Mountain Goats are announcing winter tour dates in addition to the previously announced fall shows in support of Jenny from Thebes.
