The Clientele—vocalist/lyricist/guitarist Alasdair MacLean, bassist James Hornsey, and drummer Mark Keen—return with “Trains in the Night.” Attendees of July’s Merge 35 festival were the first to hear the new song, released for the occasion on a translucent blue flexidisc included in passholder bags. Now, “Trains in the Night” is available to purchase or stream wherever you listen to music.

“Trains in the Night” is classic Clientele, precise and dreamy at once, rich in musical texture and lyric detail that builds until its pastoral scene gives way to a gorgeously psychedelic guitar passage. It follows “Still Corridor” which appears on the 7-inch of I Am Not There Anymore standout “Claire’s Not Real,” in further exploring a uniquely generative period for the band.

Met with rave reviews and widely hailed as one of the best albums of 2023, I Am Not There Anymore was a leap forward for The Clientele, as influences that had been flitting about on prior albums left a more distinct imprint as the addition of a computer to their recording process allowed for more time and space to figure out time signatures and arrangements, places where their gorgeous chamber pop could meet post-bop jazz, bossa nova, and contemporary classical and electronic music.

Following their recently concluded run of dates in the United States, The Clientele have one more stop on their 2024 agenda, at London’s Village Underground. Tickets are on sale now.
