Today, February 10, marks 30 years since the release of Superchunk’s On the Mouth. To celebrate the occasion, we’re reviving their On the Mouth–era t-shirt, available now in the Merge store on its own or bundled with the album!

For more On the Mouth history, revisit the video for “Precision Auto,” directed by Norwood Cheek, shooting on Super 8 film and utilizing every space, face, and vehicle available to them, including the band’s then practice space. Laura Ballance explains:

This was the rare music video where we didn't have to put much time into making it. I think the burden was largely on Jack (McCook, the original Superchunk guitarist) and Norwood.

The parts with the band were filmed in our old practice space, which was in the basement at the house where Jon [Wurster] and I think his brother Lane lived at the time out in the country. We filmed a few videos out there. “Mower” and “Fishing" stand out in my memory. It was a great house, and isolated enough that we could make a lot of noise.

Mac McCaughan adds:

We wrote a lot of songs in that basement!

And Cheek, revisiting the video 30 years later, explains the process of making one of the video’s most distinct shots:

For the time-lapse shots of driving through the Chapel Hill streets, I set up my camera on the back of a friend's truck, while I stood there holding the camera and tripod as still as possible while he drove around. Things are a bit different 30 years later, but after watching the video again, I’m very proud of it, and glad I didn’t fall off of that truck.
