Happy release day to Happy Birthday by Sneaks! The new album from Washington, DC’s Eva Moolchan is out today on CD and LP in the Merge store, on limited-edition opaque yellow vinyl exclusively via Rough Trade, and on your preferred digital streaming service.
Advance praise for Happy Birthday:
“Moolchan has embroidered her sound with club flourishes and contemporary rap vocal patterns without sacrificing the craggy coarseness that makes her work so endearing.” —Bandcamp, Album of the Day
“Great punk-funk, but the real triumphs are her alliance of Le Tigre-level sass and superior tunes with rave samples and hip-hop.” —MOJO, 4 out of 5
“Happy Birthday focuses on Eva Moolchan’s preoccupation with the primal energy of post-punk and the experimentation of electronica, leading to a body of work that is her most confrontational, while also opting for a bold and direct lyricism…above all Happy Birthday is the expression of an artist who refuses to compromise.” —So Young
Continuing the collaborative relationships from last year’s Highway Hypnosis with mixing engineer Carlos Hernandez and legendary producer Jacknife Lee, Moolchan felt free to turn up the energy and explore more elaborate melodies than ever before. In “Mars in Virgo” she chants, “I’ve changed a lot now I’m all grown and / I got to grow up some more / I have changed now I’m all grown up / Now I have to grow up some more.”
Moolchan also recently delivered a mixtape of songs she’s had on repeat the past few months to Flood. Check it out and wish a happy birthday to Happy Birthday on Sneaks’ Instagram and Facebook!
