Freshly returned from a tour of the UK and Europe with his bandmates in Case Oats, Max Subar returns today with “As the Weather,” the final pre-release single from his July 17, 2026 debut album Anything Could Be. Featuring a heartwrenching vocal performance by Subar, the track is an emotional lynchpin, an introspective epic that sees the Chicago singer-songwriter come to a startling realization about life — both the one he’s lived to this point, and the one he stands on the precipice of. Listen to “As the Weather” wherever you stream music, and pre-order Anything Could Be on CD or LP from the Merge store.

Max Subar on “As the Weather”:

I wrote “As the Weather” while navigating my way out of a depression. The song is about the dynamic nature of feelings, habits and preoccupations, inspired by the poignancy of leveling with yourself and pulling back the veil as you grow. Hopefully it can be a beacon for others, too.

On “As the Weather,” Subar is aided in that journey by Sam Subar (drums), Scott Daniel (strings), and Kelly Hanneman (piano). In one striking moment, Subar sings “alone is not lonely,” a keenly felt truth echoed in the arrangement of the song, which Subar laid down the original recording of in isolation, adding his collaborator’s embellishments later in the making of the album. In the mix, Sam Subar’s contemplative drumming and Daniel’s pizzicato strings give considerable heft to Max’s shimmering guitarwork, directing it towards the coming mental and spiritual reawakening that is so readily apparent in the rise and fall of his voice, all of which is driven home by Hanneman’s piano.

Following the release of Anything Could Be, Subar will take to the road, playing a string of album release shows in New York, Philadelphia, Columbus, and his hometown of Chicago. The album release shows will feature a full band, offering an opportunity to experience these songs in an entirely new light. Tickets for all dates are on sale now.
