Ibibio Sound Machine today share their new single “Give Me Peace,” a collaboration with legendary Nigerian musician and longtime Fela Kuti collaborator Dele Sosimi, taken from their forthcoming album Chopping Mountain, out September 11. Listen to “Give Me Peace” wherever you stream music, and pre-order Chopping Mountain on CD, LP, or limited edition “Green Smoke” Peak Vinyl from the Merge store in the US and UK, or Ibibio Sound Machine's Bandcamp page.
A dazzling blend of dub-inflected soul and Afrobeat, “Give Me Peace” centers around the chant-like refrain “Give me peace, give me freedom, give me love with a kiss.” Built from a jam between Dele Sosimi, Eno Williams, Afla Sackey, and Max Grunhard, the track gradually found its own direction, with piano — a rare feature on Ibibio Sound Machine tracks — layered percussion, and hypnotic rhythms giving way to the album’s most soulful and quietly euphoric moments.
The collaboration has been years in the making. A long time friend and mentor to Eno Williams, Dele Sosimi was a member of Fela Kuti’s legendary Egypt 80 and has spent decades carrying the Afrobeat tradition forward. His presence on “Give Me Peace” feels entirely natural, bringing a playful energy to a song that speaks to finding calm in an increasingly turbulent world.
As the band explain, “‘Give Me Peace’ is about finding calm in a world that is trying to tear us down. Once we established that direction, the song seemed to write itself.”
The track continues to reveal the heart of Chopping Mountain, a record that returns to the organic roots of Ibibio Sound Machine while embracing the electronics, post-punk edge, and club sensibility that have become hallmarks of the band’s sound. Across the album, themes of love, togetherness, and resilience run through songs that look towards hope without ever turning away from the realities of the present.
Ahead of today’s release, Ibibio Sound Machine announced that London-based artist Ziyad Al-Samman will join them as support on selected dates of their forthcoming UK tour this October.
