Today, Kurt Wagner shares a new visual from Lambchop’s The Bible, his new record beloved by Aquarium Drunkard, BrooklynVegan, American Songwriter, Under the Radar, and many more. “That’s Music” is the somber but sanguine closer for the album, and it arrives with a new Isaac Gale–directed video (in the sense that Gale directed artificial intelligence to create it).

Gale explains:

“That’s Music” was made using the Deep Music Visualizer. We chose classes of seed imagery that are all related to music, and the program chose between those objects, shapes, and textures based on pitch; the volume and tempo of the song control movement between the frames. So in a way, we were asking the computer to show us what music is—a really simple way to say “That’s Music.”

The music on The Bible is more unpredictable than it’s ever been on a Lambchop record. Jazz careening into country, into disco, into funk, and back to country. This is Lambchop’s new album—born in a new place but out of a process that Wagner first discovered back home at Nashville’s Springwater Supper Club, the one that helped him find his own voice in the first place. Amen. This is The Bible.

In September at Minneapolis’ Walker Art Center, Kurt Wagner completely overhauled the Lambchop live experience from a 6-piece band into a 16-piece ensemble with the works. Then, a month later at the Psychic Hotline Block Party in Carrboro, NC, Wagner flipped the script again, paring Lambchop down to piano and vocals with The Bible’s co-producer Andrew Broder. This Lambchop duo will perform two shows in December; details below.
