Ex Hex have taken new album It’s Real on the road for a massive tour that will find the band hitting both sides of North America before crossing the Atlantic for shows in Europe in late spring. Today, the trio of Mary Timony, Betsy Wright, and Laura Harris present the music video for “Rainbow Shiner” which faithfully brings their album art to life and was directed by underground animator and cult cartoonist M. Wartella.

Of the video, Wartella says: “As artists, often our destructive tendencies come from the same place in our heads that creativity comes from, and that is what we aimed to capture in this psychedelic trip clip. Well, that and to rock your socks off! For real!!!”

Real words on It’s Real:

“Garage rock snarl, arena-scale roar, and real world hurt… It’s Real rejigs rock history in both sound and spirit.” —Rolling Stone

“Ex Hex’s blasts of rock and roll will always inspire fist-pumping and sing-alongs. But when Timony, Wright and Harris deploy their exuberant music as an entry point to fearlessly reveal more of themselves—trauma and sadness, regrets and anger—It’s Real lays a path for working through painful moments and re-empowering one epic riff at a time.” —NPR

“Ex Hex mine the areas of arena rock that have been forgotten to pop history, pledging allegiance to echo, overdrive, phasers and harmony, the very things that powered the airwaves in the days before MTV.” —Pitchfork

“…a cool balance between sunny Cali rock reverie and classic heavy metal riffage. It’s a little bit ‘Kiss Me Deadly’ and a little bit ‘Cherry Bomb.’” —Vulture

“Mary Timony and company lay down enough too-cool-for-school guitar riffs on their follow-up to 2014’s excellent Rips to silence all those ‘Is rock dead?’ handwringers.” —The A.V. Club

“Where Rips favored punk economy, Ex Hex go all in for hard rock excess and hair metal aesthetics on sophomore release It’s Real.” —Bandcamp
