The Mountain Goats started 2021 on the small screen Friday night with a rapturous TV performance of “Get Famous” for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The band (comprised of John Darnielle, Matt Douglas, Peter Hughes, and Jon Wurster) recorded the session late last year at Overdub Lane with an expanded band including Dexter Moses and Annalise Stalls on saxophone and clarinet, Joe MacPhail on organ, and Chris Boerner on guitar. Watch the Getting Into Knives highlight today!

In more news from the Mountain Goats camp, the band contributed a cover of Kylesa’s “Shaping the Southern Sky” to Going to Georgia, the Merge Records benefit compilation which will remain available on Bandcamp through the rest of the month, with 100% of proceeds continuing to go to the good people at Mijente and Fair Fight.

The Mountain Goats’ two 2020 studio albums—April’s Songs for Pierre Chuvin and October’s Getting Into Knives—wound up on the year-end lists of many writers, among them The New Yorker’s John Schaefer and Slate’s Carl Wilson. The band also recorded two live sets in August; The Jordan Lake Sessions: Volumes 1 and 2 is available now in the Merge store.
