The Clientele share the exploratory “Everything You See Tonight Is Different From Itself”
With the September 22 release of Music for the Age of Miracles just around the corner, The Clientele are sharing another exciting preview of the new album!
Clocking in at nearly seven minutes, “Everything You See Tonight Is Different From Itself” covers a lot of sonic ground, moving from muted drum beats to a soaring chorus and through an ominous bridge before returning to the light. All the while, Alasdair MacLean’s lyrics paint broad but vivid strokes, describing “songbirds singing new refrains, palpitations on the train and static in the grass.” The track also features harpist Mary Lattimore playing the arpeggios typically reserved for guitar on many Clientele songs. In short, “Everything You See Tonight Is Different From Itself” proves to be another giant accomplishment in the London group’s expanding catalog.
Alasdair describes the song’s inspiration: “I went to see a ballet at a studio in Kings Cross. It had no music, just one dancer. There were only 30 or 40 of us in the audience. You could hear her breathe. Her shoes sliding on the floor. She was so close. The windows were open and cold air and the street sounds below floated in.”
