The Clean's 'Modern Rock' and "Late Last Night" reissues arrive with unearthed 1994 recording footage
For the first time since their initial release in 1994, The Clean’s Modern Rock LP and "Late Last Night" b/w "Psychedelic Clown" 7-inch are back on vinyl. New reissues of classic material by the beloved band would be enough reason to celebrate, but the group is also sharing a making-of video for “Safe in the Rain” assembled by New Zealand filmmaker Patrick O’Neill from Handicam footage shot during the recording of Modern Rock. Revisit Modern Rock and “Late Last Night” wherever you listen to music, and pick up a copy from the Merge store where we've also got new logo and Modern Rock tees!
The video, a first glimpse of an in-progress documentary about The Clean by O’Neill, offers a fly-on-the-wall view of the band at work on their second studio album. Of it, David Kilgour says:
Shot by all involved, with special thanks to Alan Starrett! After 15 years, The Clean movie is almost at “pre” post-production and looking for interested parties!
Recorded over nine days in April 1994, a week and a half where Hamish Kilgour, David Kilgour, and Robert Scott all happened to be in Dunedin, Modern Rock is spontaneous and warm, like being let in on a long-running conversation between three masters of guitar pop who could make entire sonic universes bloom by riffing off of each other.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Modern Rock and “Late Last Night,” both releases have been remastered from the original tapes by producer and engineer Tex Houston and preserve Hamish Kilgour’s original artwork. The reissues offer new and old fans of The Clean alike an opportunity to hear the band at a creative zenith, shining light on an era that, until now, has been the provenance of crate diggers and completionists. Spinning it now, it’s clear why the album has maintained its appeal for 30 years: Modern Rock is timeless, and so are The Clean.
