Sweet Spirit’s keyboardist Jake Knight on how these performances came to be:
It was summer 2020 and we were holed up in our homes lamenting the fact that we were not playing shows. It was supposed to be a year of touring, both US and our first run in Europe. Instead, nothing was happening. The idea to leave the house came from Pink Floyd’s Live at Pompeii film. It was shot in a volcano, which is badass, and it was just them and a film crew. We considered going out to Austin’s only volcano, Pilot Knob, but ended up opting for the landscape and electrical outlets of Momin’s ranch. Regardless, we’ve still been calling it Sweet Spirit Live at Pompeii. Renee Dominguez shot and edited it beautifully, and Momin, of course, ran sound.
Sweet Spirit have two shows on the books before the year is through: December 11 at Austin’s Empire Garage & Control Room, headlining Nine Mile Records’ 15-year anniversary bash, and a New Year’s Eve blowout with fellow locals Spoon at Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater.
Listen to the rest of Trinidad today, and pick it up on vinyl packaged in a glorious die-cut jacket or on CD in the Merge store. Each purchase will include the full performance video from the band.
