Superchunk are set to release their new album Wild Loneliness worldwide on February 25, but today, we are treated to a new preview from the hotly anticipated record. “On the Floor,” one of bassist Laura Ballance’s favorites from the album, features backup vocals from R.E.M.’s Mike Mills and piano from Franklin Bruno. Check the song out today while you read a new interview with Superchunk vocalist and guitarist Mac McCaughan on Stereogum, or below:
“The demo of ‘On the Floor’ reminded me of something from the R.E.M. album Reckoning,” says McCaughan, “so I wanted it to have piano—ably supplied by Franklin Bruno—and then luckily, we even got Mike Mills to add his distinctive voice in the harmonies.”
Wild Loneliness was recorded at home in North Carolina during lockdown and mixed by Wally Gagel (Here’s Where the Strings Come In). As poet Maggie Smith describes the record, “After the (ahem, completely justifiable) anger of What a Time to Be Alive, [Wild Loneliness] is less about what we’ve lost in these harrowing times and more about what we have to be thankful for.”
Check out Superchunk’s previous singles “Endless Summer” (featuring Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley of Teenage Fanclub) and “This Night” (with guests Tracyanne Campbell and Owen Pallett) before pre-ordering Wild Loneliness on CD, LP, and limited-edition green & yellow “sunspots” Peak Vinyl in the Merge store. In addition, fans in Superchunk’s home state can pick up the album at one of these North Carolina independent record shops on pink & green “watermelon” vinyl along with a free 12”×12” art print designed by Ron Liberti. The exclusive NC edition is limited to 400 copies.
