We won't mince words: Superchunk's new album, Songs in the Key of Yikes, is out now! Listen to it wherever you stream music, then double-back and pick up a copy on CD, LP, or orange & black swirl Peak Vinyl from the Merge store.

In seeking an answer for our current times, Songs in the Key of Yikes unleashes a sound that is triumphant and bright in the darkness. The album’s singles—“Is It Making You Feel Something,” “No Hope,” and “Stuck in a Dream,” which received praise from outlets like The New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, Consequence, Paste Magazine, SPIN, Stereogum, The Needle Drop, The A.V. Club, Bandcamp Daily, and more—showcase the band’s calling cards. It’s visceral, timeless and catchy as hell, a cathartic balm for these oppressive times that will feel even better once we’ve figured our collective shit out.

“It’s always been the case that everyone is going through something that you may not be aware of,” notes Mac McCaughan. “This is currently more true than ever—but also the case that we are all going through some things together. In the face of that, what good is art and where is happiness found? (Spoiler alert: I don’t know.)”

In addition to welcoming Laura King into the fold after two years as their touring drummer, Songs in the Key of Yikes features contributions from Rosali Middleman (“Bruised Lung” and “Everybody Dies”), Bella Quinlan and Holly Thomas of Quivers (“Cue”), and touring bassist Betsy Wright of Ex Hex (“Care Less”). The album was engineered by Paul Voran (The Menzingers, Hurray for the Riff Raff) and Eli Webb, and mixed by Mike Montgomery (The Breeders, Protomartyr).

Praise for Songs in the Key of Yikes:

“Quintessential Superchunk...They sound as vital and urgent and purposeful and completely inspired as they ever have.” —NPR

“Old habits die hard. ‘No Hope’ applies Superchunk's lifelong commitment to punk and indie-rock to the present moment: ‘Here we are singing “no hope, hope, no hope, no hope,”’ declares Mac McCaughan, Superchunk’s founder and leader since 1989. Punk’s response to oppression has always been defiant noise, loud major chords and singalong choruses flung at institutional foes. Will it be enough?” —New York Times

“They’ve been incredibly consistent. But that consistency is also in doing something that sounds perpetually combustible and on the verge of careening out of control. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition: being reliably explosive.” —SPIN

“Super cathartic indie rock as only Superchunk can do” —Bandcamp Daily
