Today, Misfits & Mistakes: Singles, B-sides & Strays 2007–2023, Superchunk’s fourth singles collection, is fully unleashed upon the world! Discover your new favorite Superchunk gem wherever you listen to music, and buy Misfits & Mistakes as a 4-LP box set or 2-CD set from the Merge store!
True to its title, the 50 songs that make up Misfits & Mistakes were gathered from sources as disparate as out-of-print 7-inches, defunct web series, and benefit compilations, many of which are, as of this moment, new to physical and/or digital release. One such example is the Superchunk original “I Hate History,” the A-side of their contribution to Matador Records’ 2013 Singles Going Home Alone subscription series.
In the tradition of Superchunk singles compilations, Misfits & Mistakes is a compendium of non-album tracks, demos, and cover songs. Featuring extensive liner notes by McCaughan (with additional notes from Laura Ballance), the collection tells the story of each release, from why they chose to cover songs by The Cure, Destiny’s Child, and Bananarama, to working with collaborators like Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go’s), Eleanor Friedberger, Damian Abraham (Fucked Up), Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley (Teenage Fanclub), and more!
Next week, Superchunk (McCaughan, Jim Wilbur, Laura King, and Betsy Wright) embark upon their first tour of the UK and EU since 2018, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of On the Mouth.
Of the shows, Mac offers:
It’s been more than five years since we've toured the UK and Europe, and 30 years since we have been to some of these places. This year is also the 30th anniversary of On The Mouth; we toured the UK and Europe for that album in 1993, and we are looking forward to leaning into the album on our November dates. There are obviously songs from On the Mouth that we have played regularly ever since then ("Precision Auto" and "Mower" come to mind) but plenty of deep cuts we love playing as well. Some of the songs from On the Mouth ("From the Curve" "The Only Piece That You Get") are actually about touring in Europe. We will have copies of the album on sale at the shows. This is also the first time touring with the rhythm section of Laura King (Bat Fangs, Speed Stick) on drums and Betsy Wright (Ex Hex, Bat Fangs) on bass! We’ll be throwing in some tracks from the Misfits & Mistakes box as well. It’s going to be a blast!
The shows kick off in Berlin at Privatclub on November 2, with further stops in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, the UK, and the Netherlands to follow—tickets are available now!
