In January, Superchunk kicked off our Merge 35 festivities with the release of the “Everybody Dies” b/w “As in a Blender” 7-inch. Today, they keep the party rolling as B-side “As in a Blender,” a cover of Alastair Galbraith’s 1991 hazy NZ classic, joins “Everybody Dies” in hitting your favorite digital platforms—listen to it now and grab the 7-inch while you still can!
Mac McCaughan on “As in a Blender”:
When we were thinking of covers to record for the B-side—dedicated to Hamish Kilgour in the runout groove—I came in one day and said, “What about an Alastair Galbraith song?” and Jim said, “‘As in a Blender’?” Galbraith’s meditation on mortality and the passage of time is somewhat more sanguine than ours and was exactly the one I had been listening to.
This April also marks the 30th anniversary of Superchunk’s first Merge full-length, Foolish. To celebrate, their digital catalog (minus “As in a Blender”) is available today only on a pay-what-you-want basis on Bandcamp! Superchunk will take the stage Thursday, July 25, as part of the Merge 35 festival. Single-day tickets are still available but are moving quickly!
