Superchunk is embracing the holiday season in style with Wintry Mix, a five track EP which, true to its title, brings together a Superchunk holiday original — “Shortest Day of the Year (No Tinsel Mix),” which is accompanied by a lyric video featuring footage of canine companions Birdy, Stevie, and Bart, shot by Mac McCaughan, Laura Ballance, and Laura King and edited by Csenge Balazs — covers of holiday hitmakers Wham! and indie luminaries The Magnetic Fields and Galaxie 500. Wintry Mix is available in full digitally wherever you stream music. A limited-edition double seven-inch of the EP is also available to pre-order via Superchunk’s Bandcamp page and Merge Records, and is scheduled to ship December 4, 2026.
Mac McCaughan on Wintry Mix:
Superchunk has recorded songs for Summer, songs for Halloween, and songs for Winter holidays as well. i see these seasonal songs as a fun puzzle to solve — writing a song or finding a cover in the same theme that so many artists have investigated in the past, and finding a way to put our own stamp on it. Getting to record five songs for our Wintry Mix EP gave us more room than usual to stretch out. The version of our own tune ("Shortest Day of The Year") on the 7-inch is more rock / less explicitly "Christmas-y" than the version on [REDACTED]. Beyond that we got to explore the genius of Wham!, The Magnetic Fields, and Galaxie 500...light a fire and crank it up!
Hold up, there’s a different version of “Shortest Day of the Year?” What’s with the redaction? We will reveal all on Wednesday, November 11. In the meantime, get cozy with Wintry Mix! The double 7-inch, pressed on white vinyl and housed in a gatefold jacket, will be ready to unwrap in time for your vinyl-only Christmas party, but is strictly limited to 500 hand-numbered copies — don’t delay!
