Superchunk announce new limited-edition single, with proceeds going to Southern Poverty Law Center
Superchunk are back with their second 7-inch of new music this year! “Break the Glass” is a brand-new Superchunk jam while b-side “Mad World” is a cover of a Corrosion of Conformity song. The limited-edition 7-inch is available starting today in the Merge store in the following options and will ship speedily:
-
250 numbered copies on black vinyl***SOLD OUT*** -
290 numbered copies on yellow vinyl, with sleeves signed by all four members of Superchunk***SOLD OUT***
Both songs are also available on your favorite streaming sites and wherever digital music is sold. All proceeds from the single will benefit the Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit that uses litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy to fight hate and bigotry and to seek justice for the most vulnerable members of our society.
Back in June, Superchunk’s “I Got Cut” b/w “Up Against the Wall” sold out within hours, so you might want to jump on this one! That single raised over $20,000 to benefit Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, our regional chapter of the largest women’s health care provider in the United States.
Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan on the new single:
“Break the Glass” is a song about realizing you are in an emergency situation and trying to not lose your shit so you can respond to the ongoing disaster in a productive way. Trying to figure out why so many people around you are acting like nothing is wrong and wondering if maybe you’re the one that’s crazy…but you know you’re not. We are lucky to have Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog) singing on this track because no one conveys personal (or political) urgency more effectively than Sabrina.
“Mad World” is a song by NC hardcore legends Corrosion of Conformity, one of the first punk bands I saw, and unfortunately the lyrics are still appropriate today.
Once again, Merge will be partnering with Paddle8 to make special copies of “Break the Glass” b/w “Mad World” available via auction. Each winning bidder will receive an exclusive color pressing of the 7-inch housed in the standard sleeve, in addition to a one-of-a-kind, unique work of art on a piece of fine art paper the size of an unfolded 7-inch single sleeve. Bidding begins December 1 and will last approximately two weeks.
The list of artists who made work for this auction includes Allison Schulnik, Andrew Kuo, Arlene Shechet, Bill Thelen, Chuck Webster, Eddie Martinez, Frances Stark, Fred Tomaselli, Georgia Hubley, Katherine Bernhardt, Kim Gordon, Lucas Blalock, Marcel Dzama, Matt Connors, Michael Berryhill, Mika Tajima, Paul Anthony Smith, Ron Liberti, Ryan Travis Christian, Sarah Braman, Stacy Lynn Waddell, Wendy White, Amanda Barr, Amy Feldman, Chris Johanson, Harrison Haynes, and Mira Dancy.
Enjoy the songs and stay tuned for links and more information about this unique opportunity to unite music, charity, and visual art.
