Today, Max Subar shares a new music video for “See Saw,” the second single from his full-length debut album Anything Could Be, out July 17, 2026 on Merge Records. The video finds Subar collaborating once more with “Anything Could Be” director Bobby Butterscotch, who transplants the singer-songwriter to a lush forest for a moment of tranquil introspection. Listen to “See Saw” wherever you stream music, and reserve your copy of Anything Could Be from the Merge store!
Max Subar on “See Saw”:
The song is a promise of clarity, an ode to the inevitable epiphany. Rushing anxieties or modern loneliness, cracked open by the realization that we get to do this thing called living in the first place. The way a knowing glance or conversation with a stranger can stop us in our tracks and remind us that we’re all (mostly) doing our best. I find so much optimism and wonder in these “flip the script” moments, how they can turn life into something malleable again.
A prolific pedal steel player, Subar’s use of the instrument on “See Saw” is a revelation. Introduced in the chorus, the notes bend around Subar’s vocals, making it feel as if time flows like syrup around him. If Anything Could Be is an album about creating and cultivating spaces in which one can heal, then Subar’s pedal steel — which is used here to expand upon the one magnificently crafted by Chet Zenor (electric guitar), Scott Daniel (fiddle), and Sam Subar (drums) — proves to be one of the most effective tools at his disposal: delicate and gorgeous.
Following the release of Anything Could Be, Subar will take to the road, playing a string of album release shows in New York, Philadelphia, Columbus, and his hometown of Chicago. Tickets for all dates are on sale now.
