For our now sold-out MRG30 vinyl subscription series Born Under a Good Sign, we combined the powers of Washington, D.C.’s Gauche and Andy Stack’s solo project Joyero for a split 7-inch which was released to subscribers in May. Those songs are widely available for the first time on digital services, so add them to your favorite playlists today; a portion of sales will benefit Honor the Earth, a grassroots Native environmental organization! “Evacuate” is the first new material from Joyero since Release the Dogs, and it shares that album’s minimal but propulsive production. Stack says, “This song was written during a state of emergency. A hurricane was passing over my new home of North Carolina. Everyone was gripped by fear and uncertainty, and normal life shut down for a few days. Some big limbs were broken and there was some cleaning up to do, but in the end, the storm passed and the sky cleared.”

Gauche’s “Body Count” has been a welcome addition to live shows on the band’s recent North American tour in support of A People’s History of Gauche. Coincidentally, the track was also born of the experience of a hurricane hitting close to home. “The song was written in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Puerto Rico was left with no water or electricity for the following six months. It’s been two years, and we still have no idea how many people died in the aftermath,” says Mary Jane Regalado from Gauche. “There is a certain devastation that comes with seeing firsthand how our white supremacist country has no regard for the lives of people of color. It’s around us today, and it has always been there. There’s no turning away from the harms of American imperialism and colonialism.”

Joyero continues on his European tour with The Album Leaf, which arrives on UK shores today, before connecting with San Fermin and Fruit Bats stateside in November. Gauche play a pair of shows in the northeast before returning to DC for a hometown show at Rhizome. A full list of dates for both artists can be found below.
