You think Alan Alda remembers every M*A*S*H episode? I’m sure he can give a scene-by-scene breakdown of the show’s now-legendary final installment (“So Long, Farewell, Goodbye”) and yet have no memory whatsoever of the episode where they help an injured cow give birth (“The Birthday Girls”). But, with perseverance, what began as one of his most troubled recording attempts ended as one of his best and most pivotal—a capstone for his wayfaring early period before he planted roots with Merge. The words are entrancingly cryptic, as if their simplicity conceals unfathomable depths. The music is sparse, almost whispered at times, like a secret. Its lyrics are like scattered snapshots and torn-up letters. The song titles form a poem that structures a story of heartache and dreamt redemption cloistered at the music’s core. Impressions, pledges, and slivered vantages swirl in Buckner’s voice and, while his frustrations at the time of Impasse were only part of the twist, its transmission is so open-ended that the aura of quiet desperation and hard-won grace is yours to use as you please.

“You don’t really know what you’re writing at the time,” Buckner says. “Writing seems to be kind of prophetic and it makes much more sense looking back on it. While the album doesn’t contain the sonic splendor found on future efforts, it was the first time Bejar expanded beyond accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, which allowed his songwriting vision to become more fully formed. “No Cease Fires! (Crimes Against the State of Our Love, Baby)” is arguably the first classic Destroyer song, with the kind of musical and lyrical twists and turns that put it in the same class as any of Bejar’s best. Not only did Dan Bejar offer up what was easily his best work to date; with this album, it became clear he was a songwriter who wasn’t just producing incremental batches of songs but an entire connected oeuvre. He was clearly a student of rock history but emerged as his own biggest influence. Lyrically, Bejar was at his sharpest, both in terms of dishing out barbs (largely targeted at the music industry) and commanding the full range of his free-flowing poetry—poignancy to punchlines with just the right amount of inscrutability to keep you listening again and again.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0966/3935/3143/files/e69159854184a2569388ad3ca4e868dbe7fab9ad_dd1da3abc8a0968bc4ed19253d6aa2aaf339a681_medium_jpg.jpg?v=1789600409
the-essex-green-the-long-goodbye-reissue
The Essex Green - The Long Goodbye (Reissue)

The limited-edition white Peak Vinyl reissue marks the 15th anniversary of the band’s Merge debut—and its first appearance on vinyl! Each of the twelve tracks on The Long Goodbye is distinctive. They create a patchwork of influences that range from post-Sandy Denny Fairport Convention on “By the Sea” to the spirited and catchy bounce of “The Late Great Cassiopia.” One almost hears a direct link between Flying Nun and K Records pop sensibilities. The hypnotic “Our Lady in Havana” summons the spirit of Judee Sill, and “Julia” rings like a Jimmy Webb / Emitt Rhodes collaboration at some roadside cafe. “Chartiers” would’ve been a hit on Scotland’s Postcard Records, with its stunning sound that either Lloyd Cole or Prefab Sprout longed to perfect. Take the essence of all these influences, wrap them up in sweetened Cowsill harmonies, add that passionate longing of Kevin Ayers and a dose of “Dandy”-era Kinks and you get close to what The Essex Green are capable of. The Long Goodbye is timeless work and warrants another introduction to the world.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0966/3935/3143/files/536366c407a5f9727bb8b64c294163171a0a9fad_02a07f52b3ec560e7b6c0e16e49cf9864e199431_medium_jpg.jpg?v=1785381337
the-essex-green-cannibal-sea-reissue
The Essex Green - Cannibal Sea (Reissue)

This reissue marks the first appearance of Cannibal Sea on vinyl! Our limited-edition opaque blue Peak Vinyl pressing comes with a full album download plus three rare digital bonus tracks (“Pack Up Your Sorrows,” “San Bernardino,” and “Victor”).

Note: The CD available here is the original 2006 CD pressing. While it’s hard to call it “best,” it’s impossible to deny that our self-titled record is and will always be the most sentimental to me. It’s where it all started. A collection of “demos” posted every couple months on Myspace between 2007 and 2008 until we were signed to our first label, Portland, Oregon’s Bladen County Records, who compiled them all as a full LP in 2009. The songs came effortlessly, and each one was recorded by a mobile multitrack recorder in various rooms (storage spaces, the back office of a record store, living rooms) throughout North Carolina literal hours after it was conceived. There’s a freshness and vitality to these songs that I hope, but don’t expect, to recapture again. It’s the sound of a songwriter discovering their voice in real time. The record has been out of print on vinyl for a few years now, and I’m excited to reissue it with some slight updates to the original packaging with my friends at Merge Records!

—Stuart McLamb, March 2019

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0966/3935/3143/files/8bb282dadaa00f4090c2d8c6e001b29f212e2829_2fd144e44c0206d63b5c825c89b6709f1138a147_medium_jpg.jpg?v=1785381503
a-giant-dog-fight-reissue
A Giant Dog - Fight (Reissue)

Celebrating its tenth birthday in 2022 is A Giant Dog Fight, the Texas group’s hard-to-find debut album, remixed by Stuart Sikes from the original tape, remastered, and pressed on green vinyl just for the occasion.
