Taylor’s last record, 2013’s \u003ci\u003eHaw\u003c\/i\u003e, or to the searching of 2010’s \u003ci\u003eBad Debt\u003c\/i\u003e, the stunning acoustic LP he made at his kitchen table shortly after the birth of his son. \u003ci\u003eLateness of Dancers\u003c\/i\u003e was recorded in a tin-roofed barn outside of Hillsborough, North Carolina, last fall and includes many of Taylor’s longtime collaborators, like Phil and Brad Cook of Megafaun, the guitarist \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/william-tyler\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWilliam Tyler\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, and his erstwhile recording partner Scott Hirsch. Alexandra Sauser-Monnig of Mountain Man contributes backing vocals; her tender, wooly voice both complements and challenges Taylor’s.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe record takes its name from a Eudora Welty story, which is noteworthy not because of its origins—although there are hints of Welty in Taylor’s work, and not just Welty but Flannery O’Connor and Faulkner and Barry Hannah and Larry Brown and the whole pantheon of brutal and exquisite southern writers—but because Taylor is the type of person who recognizes the beauty in a phrase like that. It is a record about self-discovery and self-knowledge, and how impossible it is to outsmart yourself. I don’t know how you learn a lesson like that, except the hard way. “The misery of love is a funny thing \/ The more it hurts \/ The more you think \/ You can stand a little pain,” he sings on “Mahogany Dread,” one of \u003ci\u003eLateness\u003c\/i\u003e’ most telling tracks. These are the kinds of lies we tell ourselves to feel the things we want to feel, even when those pleasures are buried in a whole lot of hurt.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEventually, though, the lies stack up and become blinding, like snowflakes on a windshield. What’s a person supposed to do? On the swinging, groove-heavy “I’m a Raven (Shake Children),” Taylor—now evoking the story of Noah—sings “Maybe I could see it as a peaceful world” in a way that indicates to me that, in fact, he probably can’t. Still, over and over, Taylor subverts that creeping darkness, turns it into something useful, defines it and defangs it and transforms it; \u003ci\u003eLateness of Dancers\u003c\/i\u003e is, against all odds, an optimistic record. I hear so much hopefulness in how he sings the word “love” toward the end of “Day O Day (A Love So Free)”—I picture him opening his mouth and it just sort of falling out whole, it’s that unencumbered—or in the coppery warmth of “Lucia,” when Taylor tells us \u003ci\u003eshe was beautiful\u003c\/i\u003e in a way that makes me giddy. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt seems unlikely to me that there will be another record this year that does this work, or does it this well. \u003ci\u003eLateness of Dancers\u003c\/i\u003e is a deliverance from the self, to the self. Though maybe my lapse was reasonable: I had just quit my job, the most recent and last, in a series of dead-end gigs stretching back 20 years, with the vow that my children would understand their father as a man in love with his world and the inventor of his own days. They would be rare in that regard. And then—driven by monthly bills and pure fear—I left for another tour, carrying a load of guilt that I could just barely lift. At that time, the coronavirus pandemic had only recently changed life as we know it, and many students who depended on school for many of their daily meals were struggling with food insecurity in the wake of school closures. The DPS Foundation was on the front lines of the effort to feed our most vulnerable kids, spearheading food donations and distribution throughout the city of Durham. Having been a volunteer to load school buses with food bound for different distribution centers in town, I can say that the work the DPS Foundation did was absolutely essential and deeply inspiring. To see just how many buses we were loading full of food every day—to understand the lack and the need throughout Durham—was breathtaking in a different way.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt’s now September of 2020 and, with no comprehensive federal strategy in place, the coronavirus still rages. Durham Public Schools students are now learning remotely, which raises a whole new host of issues: Do all students have a strong enough internet connection? Do they have an internet connection at all? Do students—particularly younger children—have an adult to help them navigate to the places that they need to be online in order to participate in class? Remote learning has foregrounded issues of educational equity in ways that are sharp and unrelenting, and has placed an undue burden on immigrant, Black, and Latinx families.
